Six Killed in Northern Lebanon Building Collapse

At least six people were killed and several others injured after two adjacent residential buildings collapsed in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, local officials confirmed on Sunday.

The head of Tripoli’s municipal council, Abdel Hamid Karimeh, said the collapse occurred in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighbourhood, adding that the exact number of people still trapped under the rubble remains unknown.

Search and rescue operations are continuing, with teams from Lebanon’s civil defence, the Lebanese Red Cross, and other emergency agencies working at the scene. Local residents also joined efforts, helping to remove debris and search for survivors.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution amid fears of further collapses. Army personnel and internal security forces were deployed to secure the area. At least eight injured people were rescued from the rubble.

President Joseph Aoun ordered all emergency services to remain on high alert and instructed authorities to provide shelter for displaced residents. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said the government is prepared to offer housing assistance to families forced to evacuate unsafe buildings.

Officials and analysts say the tragedy highlights Lebanon’s long-standing infrastructure crisis, worsened by years of economic collapse, corruption, and neglect, leaving many buildings structurally unsafe.
