Hamas Leader Rejects Disarmament While Israeli Occupation of Gaza Continues

Hamas’s senior political leader based abroad, Khaled Meshaal, has firmly rejected calls for Palestinian factions in Gaza to disarm, saying that doing so under occupation would leave Palestinians defenceless.

Speaking at the Al Jazeera Forum in Doha, Meshaal said demands for Hamas to hand over its weapons are part of a long-standing effort to weaken Palestinian armed resistance. He argued that disarmament while Israeli forces continue to occupy Gaza would turn Palestinians into “easy targets.”

Meshaal stressed that any serious discussion about Gaza’s future must first focus on ending the war, enabling reconstruction, and ensuring lasting stability. He added that Hamas has shared its position through mediators including Qatar, Türkiye, and Egypt, as well as through indirect contacts with the United States.

Last month, US President Donald Trump called for the complete demilitarisation of Hamas and warned of consequences if the group refused. Hamas has repeatedly stated it will not lay down arms as long as Israel maintains control over Gaza.

The issue remains a major point of contention in regional and international efforts to address the ongoing conflict.
