Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi Faces Fresh Prison Term in Iran

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to an additional seven-and-a-half years in prison, according to her lawyer.

Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said an Iranian court in the north-eastern city of Mashhad sentenced Mohammadi to six years for “collusion and gathering” and one-and-a-half years for “propaganda activities.” The court also imposed a two-year travel ban and ordered two years of internal exile to Iran’s eastern Khusf region.

Mohammadi, 53, was arrested in December after attending a memorial ceremony, where authorities accused her of making “provocative statements.” Her family has alleged that she was beaten during the arrest and later taken to hospital due to her deteriorating health.

Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her campaign against women’s oppression in Iran, Mohammadi has spent more than a decade in prison. According to the Narges Foundation, the latest ruling brings the total prison time ordered against her to 44 years.

Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, said Mohammadi refused to defend herself in court, calling the proceedings illegitimate and refusing to participate. The foundation also revealed that she began a hunger strike earlier this month in protest against her detention.

Human rights groups have expressed serious concern over her physical condition and called the trial unfair. Mohammadi was temporarily released from Tehran’s Evin prison on medical grounds late last year but was later re-arrested.

The case has drawn renewed international criticism of Iran’s treatment of political prisoners and human rights activists. Source BBC
