Japan’s Ruling Coalition Set for Overwhelming Win as PM Takaichi Secures Public Mandate

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), under the leadership of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, is projected to achieve a sweeping victory in Sunday’s snap general election, according to preliminary results and exit polls.

Public broadcaster NHK’s exit poll suggests that the LDP-led alliance could win more than two-thirds of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, giving the government strong control over the lower house. The LDP on its own is also expected to secure a clear majority.

Prime Minister Takaichi, Japan’s first female leader, called the early election just months after taking charge of the party, framing it as a test of public confidence in her leadership. Her apparent success contrasts sharply with previous administrations, which saw declining support amid corruption scandals and increasing economic pressure on households.

Despite severe winter weather, including rare snowfall in Tokyo and transport disruptions across the country, voters turned out to cast their ballots. Many analysts believe Takaichi’s high approval ratings, populist economic pledges, and strong online engagement especially among younger voters played a key role in mobilising public support.

Takaichi’s campaign focused on economic revival, tax reforms, and stricter oversight of immigration and foreign ownership. While supporters see her agenda as decisive and reform-driven, critics have raised concerns about rising government debt and the potential impact of increased defence spending.

Internationally, the election outcome is being closely watched. Relations with China remain tense, and Takaichi’s firm stance on regional security particularly regarding Taiwan has drawn both domestic debate and international attention. The United States has welcomed her projected victory, viewing Japan’s political stability as important for regional security in Asia.

If confirmed, the landslide win would place Prime Minister Takaichi in a strong position to push long-term reforms, including her long-held ambition to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution an issue likely to shape the country’s political future.
